“HNH create the shape of a performance from scratch, even when playing a written melody. They avoid clichés as a group as well as on their own. Time-play, texture-play and harmonic improvising are equally available at any moment.” Kevin Whitehead (from album linernotes on cleanfeed records)

the name of the next song
Curated by Zach Dunham and Monroe Street
IBeam Brooklyn is pleased to announce the name of the next song, a new mini-series of performances featuring artists whose work engages with popular music and/or mass media forms. Over the course of three weekends in August, a diverse roster of performing artists will present a variety of projects, ranging from electro-acoustic song music to contemporary dance to new media. A unique juxtaposition of many artists who never before shared a bill, the name of the next song brings together artists active in numerous communities within New York’s downtown scene with the aim of provoking new conversations between art music and pop. The name of the next song presents a forward-looking perspective on the new possibilities opened up by these forms − a perspective inspired in many ways by the songs of composer Arthur Russell, one of which has lent this series its title.
The name of the next song is curated by Zach Dunham and Monroe Street of School/Schoolco. School is a song-based ensemble whose work is oriented around a questioning, or “unlearning,” of conventional notions of song-form, subjectivity/identity, and “high” and “low” art. The organizational branch of School, Schoolco, is a newly formed artist-resource group which presents concerts and music/art educational workshops both in and outside of New York.
