“…those ‘forty-twenty’ sets the club owners wanted everybody to play. They wanted you to begin your set twenty minutes after the hour and play until the end of the hour and then come back twenty minutes later and play another set….you could end up doing four of five sets like that during a night…….” -Miles Davis, 1989.

Inspired by the challenge of jazz club engagements from the 1940’s, 50’s, and 60’s, drummer Vinnie Sperrazza, pianist Jacob Sacks, trombonist Jacob Garchik and bassist Dave Ambrosio have formed 40twenty and will be presenting two 60-minute sets nightly, Tuesday through Saturday, July 27th-July 31st and August 3rd-August 7th, at Ibeam Music.

While this is the debut engagement of 40twenty, the albums “Peak Inn” (Fresh Sound New Talent 343) featuring Sperrazza, Sacks, and Ambrosio, “Romance”, (Yestereve Records 02) featuring Garchik and Sacks, and “Two Miles A Day” (Yeah Yeah/Loyal Label LLCD 001-YY4001), the acclaimed release featuring Sacks with legendary drummer Paul Motian, map out the territory the new quartet occupies.

The 10-night, 20-set engagement will be recorded for possible release.

I Am Page Turner is a broad reflection on narrative in music. Repetitive chants, subtly shifting musical cells, and sly pauses add to the effect of sounds as a story with continuity and surprising shape. The music assimilates strains of gospel, minimalism, and late romantic piano repertoire while mixing rhythmic undercurrents to create a lyrical yet exuberant group-interpreted story. Varmus’s music has been described as ‘lyrical and self-assured’ by the New Yorker. Cadence magazine wrote that Varmus ‘has fully absorbed the jazz trumpet tradition, especially from bebop on.’

Free improv with rock energy, late-Romantic harmony with roots in jazz, the Matt Blostein/Vinnie Sperrazza Band creates an engaging instrumental sound that’s at once distinct, personal, and welcoming. Imagine Ellington and Zappa reminiscing about Strauss and Ornette Coleman, as plaintive saxophones and rumbling drums peek out from around the corner. “Original tunes built with highly syncopated phrasing, but presented with enough musicality to make it easily accessible.” -Bob Karlovits, Pittsburgh Tribune Review

Los Totopos, Tim Berne’s new touring band, is a potent blend of new voices and new ideas. Berne responds with a stunning book of new pieces balancing compositional rigor with fluid group improvisation. Hypnotic rhythms and long, seductive melodies collide with jagged dissonances and surprising textural shifts. A lush, organic blend of saxophones and clarinets is layered with electronic and acoustic keyboards and an ever-changing tapestry of percussion. Freedom and discipline, consonance and discord, past, present and future- all work together to power this new band from Tim Berne.

Called “fearless and iconoclastic (Lucid Culture, NYC),” the kaleidoscopic quartet Dollshot is reinventing art song with experimental, evocative arrangements of 20th century music and adventurous originals. The Brooklyn-based band met originally in their studies at the New England Conservatory and represents an array of musical styles including classical, microtonal jazz, and post-rock minimalism. Their kaleidoscopic sound is realized through works by Schoenberg, Poulenc, and Ives in provocative new electro-acoustic sound settings and originals ranging from the avant-pop “The Trees” to the abstract “Fear of Clouds.”

artist statement:
As a reflection of my own fractured musical personality, Leeway is a medium-sized ensemble that moves between composed songs, abstract instrumental pieces and totally improvised group compositions. Most of the composed tunes are pieces that have been coming to me in recent years that seemed to have no real home with any of the collaborative projects I was involved with at the time. So part of my impetus with this group was to create an ongoing ensemble for this music and also to create a forum to explore the wide ‘in between’ spaces of ensemble improvisation and ultimately for me, how all of that interfaces with visual art. As an emerging visual artist, this music is inextricably linked in my person with my drawings and paintings. I will have some work to show at this gig; several paintings and a bunch of drawings. It is clear to me that the creative process is the same when improvising music or improvising a picture. The start is an initial gambit of a kind that bleeds interest and possibility, then development ensues naturally as the distinct parts of the initial idea spin out their progeny. At the same time a larger perspective seeks composition and broad structural form that enables the piece, whether art or music, to breath and become it’s own entity.
To categorize this music as ‘this or that’ kind is to limit something that is ultimately a reflection of the musicians and audience – in other words trying to limit something that is essentially in nature limitless. Its has many elements from the music of our culture and, again in reflection of us, it is eclectic and wide in style. All a fancy way of saying that it is not just ‘jazz’ or ‘rock’ or ‘funk’ or ‘free improv’ but music that falls and operates in the ‘leeway’ between more rigid ideas of musical style and mediums.
